Ideal Customer Profile
Also known as: ICP
A precise description of the account that gets the most value from your product, fastest — used to focus sales, marketing, and product on buyers you actually win.
Definition
An ICP describes the company (not the individual) for which your product is close to inevitable: the firmographics, technology context, triggering situations, and internal characteristics that predict a fast sale, a successful deployment, and a durable renewal. It is built backwards from evidence — your best existing customers — rather than forwards from ambition.
The ICP earns its keep as a filter. Pipeline that matches it closes faster and churns less; pipeline that does not consumes the same sales effort for worse economics. The same logic disciplines product ("does this feature serve the ICP?") and marketing ("does this channel reach it?").
Competitors have ICPs too, stated or revealed. Their case studies, pricing tiers, and feature emphasis disclose who they are built for — and the overlap between their ICP and yours defines the deals you will fight for, while the non-overlap defines the flanks each of you leaves open.
Why it matters for competitive intelligence
Where your ICP overlaps a competitor's, every deal is contested and enablement must be sharp. Where it does not, you have uncontested ground — if you know the boundary.
How Rivalize helps
Rivalize's positioning analysis surfaces who each rival is actually targeting — the segments in their messaging and case studies — so you can see the overlap with your own ICP clearly.
Related terms
Market Segmentation
Dividing a heterogeneous market into groups with distinct needs and buying behaviour, so product, pricing, and messaging can be aimed instead of averaged.
Positioning
The act of shaping the place a product occupies in the customer's mind relative to alternatives — the single idea you want to own in the category.
Jobs to Be Done
A lens that says customers do not buy products — they "hire" them to get a specific job done. Competition is defined by the job, not the product category.
Value Proposition
The specific, believable statement of the value a customer gets from choosing you — the pains removed and gains created, relative to the alternatives they would otherwise use.

Why not just use ChatGPT?
Prompts guess. Rivalize knows.
15-25% of teams use AI prompts for competitive research. Here is why that approach falls short.
Real scraping, not hallucination
We scrape 40+ actual pages per competitor. AI prompts guess from training data that may be months or years out of date.
Source attribution on every claim
Every data point links to where we found it. Prompts cannot cite sources because they do not access real-time data.
Monitoring, not one-shots
Rivalize tracks changes over time and scores momentum trends. Prompts give you a snapshot that is already stale by the time you read it.
Real data, real sources, real intelligence.
