Competitive Analysis

Competitive Intelligence

Also known as: CI, Competitive analysis

The systematic gathering and analysis of information about competitors and the market, turned into decisions — pricing, positioning, roadmap, and sales strategy.

Origin: An established professional discipline; the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals association (SCIP) was founded in 1986.

Definition

Competitive intelligence (CI) is the discipline of collecting, analysing, and acting on information about competitors, customers, and the broader market. It is not corporate espionage — it draws almost entirely on public and observable sources: websites, pricing pages, job postings, product changelogs, reviews, filings, and press. The craft is turning that scattered raw material into a decision a team can actually make.

A working CI function does three things a one-off research project cannot: it persists (watching continuously, not once), it provenances (every claim traceable to a source), and it pushes (surfacing changes to the people who need them, when they happen). Static artifacts like battlecards decay because they do only the first, and only once.

CI feeds nearly every commercial function: product uses it to prioritise a roadmap, sales uses it to win deals, marketing uses it to sharpen positioning, and leadership uses it to allocate resources. The value is not the data — it is the shortened lag between a competitor doing something and your team responding.

Why it matters for competitive intelligence

The cost of weak CI never shows up as a line item — it hides in slipped deals, unnecessary discounts, and a roadmap aimed at last quarter. Shrinking the response lag is the whole game.

How Rivalize helps

Rivalize is competitive intelligence built around those three properties: it watches competitors continuously, cites every claim to a source, and flags meaningful changes — a full report where every claim is cited to a source — the depth of a research project, done for you.

Why not just use ChatGPT?

Prompts guess. Rivalize knows.

15-25% of teams use AI prompts for competitive research. Here is why that approach falls short.

Real scraping, not hallucination

We scrape 40+ actual pages per competitor. AI prompts guess from training data that may be months or years out of date.

Source attribution on every claim

Every data point links to where we found it. Prompts cannot cite sources because they do not access real-time data.

Monitoring, not one-shots

Rivalize tracks changes over time and scores momentum trends. Prompts give you a snapshot that is already stale by the time you read it.
