Competitive Analysis
Share of Voice
Also known as: SOV
A measure of a brand's presence in a channel relative to competitors — the slice of total category conversation, advertising, or search visibility it owns.
Definition
Share of voice (SOV) quantifies how much of the total attention in a market a brand commands compared with its rivals. Originating in media-buying (a brand's share of total category advertising spend), it now spans channels: share of search impressions, of social conversation, of press coverage, of paid keywords. If ten brands compete and yours accounts for a fifth of the category's visible presence, your SOV is roughly 20%.
SOV matters because attention tends to track — and often precede — market share. A brand systematically out-shouting rivals in the channels buyers use is usually gaining ground; a brand whose SOV is slipping is often losing mindshare before it shows up in revenue. The "excess share of voice" idea holds that a brand growing its SOV faster than its market share tends to grow.
Measuring SOV requires observing the whole competitive set, not just yourself — you cannot compute a share without the denominator of what every rival is doing in the same channel.
Why it matters for competitive intelligence
SOV is a leading indicator: a competitor ramping their presence in your keywords or category conversation is often the first visible sign of a push, well before it hits the revenue numbers.
How Rivalize helps
Rivalize watches competitors' visible market presence — content, positioning, and channel activity — so a rival ramping their share of voice shows up as a dated signal rather than a surprise.

Prompts guess. Rivalize knows.
15-25% of teams use AI prompts for competitive research. Here is why that approach falls short.
Real scraping, not hallucination
We scrape 40+ actual pages per competitor. AI prompts guess from training data that may be months or years out of date.
Source attribution on every claim
Every data point links to where we found it. Prompts cannot cite sources because they do not access real-time data.
Monitoring, not one-shots
Rivalize tracks changes over time and scores momentum trends. Prompts give you a snapshot that is already stale by the time you read it.
