Modern CI & AI
Source Citations (Provenance)
Also known as: Cited intelligence, Provenance
The practice of attaching to every intelligence claim the source it came from — the difference between intelligence you can act on and content you have to re-verify.
Definition
A citation binds a claim to its evidence: this fact, from this page, captured at this time. In competitive intelligence the discipline is load-bearing, because CI claims are precisely the kind that get challenged — in deal reviews, board meetings, and pricing debates — and an unsourced claim loses to a confident opinion every time. Provenance is what lets intelligence contradict the room and survive.
The discipline has sharpened in the AI era. Language models generate fluent, plausible, uncited competitive "facts" — and fluency is not evidence. The operational standard that separates intelligence tooling from content tooling is whether every generated claim can be traced to a captured source, and whether the system abstains when it has none.
Citations also give intelligence a maintenance property: when the source changes, the claims built on it are identifiable and updatable. Uncited intelligence cannot even be audited for staleness — nobody knows what it was based on.
Why it matters for competitive intelligence
Unsourced competitive claims are liabilities: reps repeat them to prospects who know better, and strategy debates settle on whoever asserts loudest. Citations make intelligence checkable, and checkable is what makes it usable.
How Rivalize helps
This is Rivalize's first pillar: every claim in every report carries its citation, and where the pipeline lacks a source it abstains rather than filling the gap — being the "cited company" is the product's identity.

AI Hallucination
When an AI system generates fluent, confident, false information — the central failure mode of using general-purpose chatbots for competitive research.
Competitive Intelligence
The systematic gathering and analysis of information about competitors and the market, turned into decisions — pricing, positioning, roadmap, and sales strategy.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
In CI, the proportion of monitored events that actually deserve attention — the metric that decides whether a monitoring system gets read or muted.
Agent-Readable Intelligence
Competitive intelligence structured so AI agents — not just humans — can query and act on it: typed data, APIs, and protocols like MCP instead of PDFs and slide decks.

Prompts guess. Rivalize knows.
15-25% of teams use AI prompts for competitive research. Here is why that approach falls short.
Real scraping, not hallucination
We scrape 40+ actual pages per competitor. AI prompts guess from training data that may be months or years out of date.
Source attribution on every claim
Every data point links to where we found it. Prompts cannot cite sources because they do not access real-time data.
Monitoring, not one-shots
Rivalize tracks changes over time and scores momentum trends. Prompts give you a snapshot that is already stale by the time you read it.
Real data, real sources, real intelligence.
